On Record is a regular feature which lets South Carolina’s policy-makers speak their mind about the issues most important to them. If you’re interested in guest-blogging for On Record, email PPR Editor Logan Smith. Today’s column is from former Richland Co. Young Republicans President Nettie Britts, on Twitter at @nettie_b.
Earlier this month, Governor Nikki Haley vetoed 81 items from the Legislature’s budget, including Veto 51. This eliminated $453,680 from the budget which would go to rape crisis centers.
Some of you know that I was the victim of a home invasion three years ago. A man severely beat my head and face, leaving me with lingering pain and seizures.
He also sexually assaulted me.
I have not spoken of this detail before now. But there is no shame in what was done to me. The shame lies in the perpetrator, and those who would not help.
That June day, when I stumbled out of my house and found help, the paramedics asked me if I wanted anyone called. I answered, Sexual Trauma Center, and an advocate met me at the hospital.
I can’t imagine recovering from my injuries alone. Someone helped me fill out the paperwork, was there to listen to my endless frustrations; someone was there. Without my advocates, I would still be broken.
Due to the publicity my case received, many people, virtual strangers, reached out to me, across both political aisles, asking what they could do to help. I remember the particular kindness of one person who asked — Representative, later Governor, Nikki Haley.
Governor Haley, I have an answer as to how you can help me. In a state that does not provide enough support to survivors as it is, don’t take away the center of so many. Remember me, if you like, when deciding whether to fund the rape crisis centers. Remember me when other bills and budgets come out, to help crime survivors. Remember my voice, and don’t walk away.

I was suggested this web site by my cousin. I am not sure whether this post is written by him as nobody else know such detailed about my problem.
You are wonderful! Thanks!
