Looking back at last year’s State of the State: Health Care

As we anticipate Governor Haley’s State of the State address tonight, Palmetto Public Record wanted to take a look at some policy proposals she laid out and where they have gone in the past year.

Specifically, Haley said in her 2011 speech, “The reality is that the federal health care bill will cost this state $2.7 billion more by the year 2020.”

We’re not sure where the governor’s office found that fact, considering her estimate is about five times as high as estimates from the experts at the Urban Institute and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

If you look at Tables 8 and 12, these experts estimate increased state spending from 2014 to 2019 under low and high participation estimates.

Hat tip to Sue Berkowitz at Appleseed and CBPP’s number crunchers for their help in locating data to fact check that 2011 figure from the governor’s State of the State address.
